Karma Chokor Dechen Nunnery
Rumtek, Sikkim
General Education
Alongside Tibetan and Dharma studies, KCD nuns are taught English, mathematics and some basic science, health education and geography. Yearly exams are held to assess progress and encourage younger nuns to achieve good competency levels. Many nuns choose to continue English classes beyond their compulsory years. English is useful for talking with visitors from other countries, for navigating shops and services (most of which use English signage), and for accessing information via the internet. Mathematics is taught for functional numeracy (for example, managing money, budgets, calculating quantities). Science, health and geography concepts are incorporated into English lessons so that young nuns receive a well-rounded general education and an understanding of the world around them. Young nuns are encouraged to draw, paint and sing, both to explore and illustrate classroom concepts as well as for pleasure and creative expression.
The nuns really enjoy classes with their wonderful teacher, Miss Dechen. Miss Dechen's salary is now very kindly sponsored by the Dhagpo Switzerland Association. To contribute to the nuns' general education fund, visit the "Support KCD" page.

Health & Nutrition
The foundations of good health, including adequate and varied nutrition, are extremely important in the KCD nunnery. Daily meals are cooked from fresh seasonal produce sourced locally. Drinking water is filtered and boiled to prevent illness.
Each nun receives support for regular health checkups and medicines as required. Nuns access both western and Tibetan medicine.
Young nuns receive health and hygiene education as part of their regular schooling and mentoring and are encouraged to choose active play for exercise. They can often be seen enjoying badminton and ball games.
The Origins Centre Sangha in Western Australia and the Wangapeka Sangha in New Zealand gratefully coordinate support for our food and health. Please visit the "Support KCD" page for information on how to contribute to the KCD health and nutrition fund.
